Two Versions of Greater Israel
Most Americans have never heard the term “Greater Israel.” Others have heard it but dismiss it as a conspiracy theory, religious fantasy, or political slogan. Part of the confusion is that the term does not have a single universally accepted definition. Different people use it to describe very different ideas. The following maps illustrate the two most common interpretations.
Political Interpretation
The political interpretation focuses on control of historic Palestine, including Israel, East Jerusalem, the West Bank, and potentially the Gaza Strip. Supporters of this vision often point to historical, security, religious, or national claims to the land. Critics argue that achieving such a vision would require the permanent denial of Palestinian self-determination and make a viable Palestinian state impossible.
Biblical Interpretation
The biblical interpretation is based on descriptions of the Promised Land found in the Hebrew Bible. Depending on the interpretation, the territory extends from the “River of Egypt” to the Euphrates River and could encompass all or parts of present-day Israel/Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Egypt. This interpretation receives significant attention because of its vast geographic scope and its implications for Israel’s neighbors.
Some people are referring to expansion within historic Palestine, while others are referring to a much larger territory associated with biblical descriptions of the Promised Land. The distinction shapes the broader debate about Israel’s territorial expansion and its possible future direction.
